Though less familiar to North American gamers, the U.K.-based SCi is a well established, widely recognized publisher of computer games in European markets. The company was founded in 1988 and has grown fairly steadily since then. SCi's breakthrough hit was 1997's Carmageddon. In 2000, the publisher acquired Actualize Ltd., and in 2003, it bought Pivotal Games, developer of its successful Conflict: Desert Storm titles.
In the middle of May 2005, during the annual E3 show, European publisher SCi announced it had officially acquired the then-beleaguered British publisher Eidos. A few months later, the merged company announced that it would use the internationally recognized Eidos label for its future releases, due in particular to familiarity that North American gamers have with that brand name. The name of the parent company, however, remains SCi Entertainment Group.
