King of the Monsters 2

Review

by Brett Alan Weiss

King of the Monsters 2 does what a sequel is supposed to do. It improves upon the original game in many ways while keeping the flavor and basic play mechanics. You still control ugly monsters who fight and wrestle for the control of Earth, and your surroundings are just as dangerous if not more so than the original game. This time around, minor fighter aliens nip at your heals (so to speak), trying to take points off your life gauge and your attention away from the bigger monsters.

There are many more enemy monsters in this game than in the original, each of them equipped with unique special attacks and fighting skills. For example: Eifflelyte can perform an electric head smash, Claw Head spits out a scattering slime ball, and Lavicus is armed with a confusion ray. The first King of the Monsters had just four different fighting locations while this game features nine. And each level is an improvement visually over anything the first game had to offer.

This game, like the original, features solid, workman-like sound effects, decent graphics, and plenty of monster mayhem. The backgrounds are better this time around, though; they're more detailed and less cheap-looking. And the characters are more agile and more smoothly animated.

If you own King of the Monsters and you sort of like it, but don't love it, you may want to try a different game such as WWF Royal Rumble or Mortal Kombat II. But if you absolutely adored the original game concept -- monsters wrestling while being attacked by outside forces -- you will probably want to pick this one up.
