Star Wars: Rebel Assault

Review

by Christopher Michael Baker

Who's your favorite Star Wars hero? Luke Skywalker? Princess Leia? Han Solo? Chewbacca? How about Rookie One? Huh? You don't remember Rookie One? Then you haven't played Star Wars: Rebel Assault.

Yes, the Star Wars name and feel are behind this game, but the characters we all came to know and love are all replaced by a bunch of Rebel pilots you've never heard of. Therein lies this game's greatest fault.

As Rookie One, you do a lot of things our heroes from the movies did, including a battle with AT-ATs and a trip through an asteroid field, both of which are portrayed well. There is nothing wrong with scenes like these; in fact, they can be a lot of fun. But what gets me is the climactic Death Star trench run scene. It's virtually the same thing as in Star Wars, except with different characters and no Force element to it. No Force element to the climax of the game?! What's up with that?

The graphics are as good as you'll see on Sega CD, if not a little grainy at times. The controls take a while to get used to, but (with the exception of a couple levels featuring a behind-the-X-wing viewpoint, which require luck more than anything else) they are usually manageable. The music and sounds are also fantastic -- just what you'd expect from a Star Wars game.

Rebel Assault is actually one of the Sega CD games most worth owning. If you want a Star Wars game that sort of takes elements from each of the three original movies and combines them into one game, you will probably enjoy this. Just don't get too offended when it's Rookie One and Jake Farrell that stop Darth Vader and blow up the Death Star instead of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.
