Based on the sport of cricket, a game of bat and ball that has gained a huge profile in such countries as England, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, Shane Warne Cricket 99 is a sport that hasn't received much credential out of the European/Asian/Australian PC markets.

Shane Warne the man himself is unarguably the best leg-spinner to have ever played the game, and has changed the face of the game forever. His importance in the Australian juggernaut of the 90s is unmeasurable, and his emergence has created a generation of young leg-spinners in his homeland. Since his debut in 1993, Warne has quickly scooped up over three hundred wickets in test cricket to become his countries all-time highest wicket taker to date (3/2000). He also took on the vice-captaincy role in 1999, while becoming a regular part in the most successful Test side in the 90s, a member of the World Cup 99 champion side, as well as a member of the Australian side that became runners up in World Cup 96.

The titles influence's are hard to trace, but the 1992 cricket release on the NES labelled International Cricket, and its follow up Super International Cricket on the Super Nintendo seem to be some of the earliest commercial cricket releases. Brian Lara Cricket on the Sega Genesis is another major console influence

PC releases include Cricket 96, Cricket 97, EA Cricket 98, World Cup 99, however this conversion is really just that, more influenced by past console titles than anything else.
