Lemmings 3D

Review

by Michael L. House

Lemmings first made it's debut on the PC in the late 1980s. Lemmings are known for their suicidal tendencies by walking mindlessly into oceans or anything that will cause their death. And the whole point of the game is to stop them from doing so. The game had a huge fan base and spawned many sequels. Now Psygnosis has brought those pesky lemmings back in Lemmings 3D.

As the name alludes to, Lemmings 3D is done with a full camera angle system and 3D graphics. As soon as the lemmings start dropping down into the level, you'll have to utilize the many camera views to your advantage. Unfortunately, the camera system is a bit tricky to handle and often times, you'll get disoriented in heat of things. It takes really takes some getting used to and until you do, you will find yourself pretty frustrated. Picking the right camera angle is very essential because you need to be precise on where to direct the lemmings. You can assign certain jobs to lemmings, such as lemmings that block and redirect the stream of traffic, lemmings that dig tunnels and so forth.

Other than the fact that it's in 3D, Lemmings 3D is set up very much like the previous games. The task/job thing has remained unchanged. Also unchanged are the diabolical puzzles and levels that you must maneuver through. And because the game is in 3D, this adds a whole new perspective to the puzzle element. Sometimes you'll have to jump lemmings into the foreground from the background or build 3D staircases. Unfortunately, the game is a bit frustrating because of this. Not only do you have to keep track of the camera angles, but you must also worry about which lemmings are in the foreground, which are in the background, which ones are on one level and which ones are on another level. And while this sounds like the makings of a good puzzle game, it's incredibly difficult and you'll die a lot. The overly colorful graphics don't help much either. Lemmings will often blend in with the greener backgrounds making it impossible sometimes to see them.

Still, if you liked Lemmings, or just like puzzle games in general, then you may like Lemmings 3D. Once you get the hang of it, it can be pretty addicting, but the frustration level remains throughout the entire duration of the game. It's just a bit too hard and the camera system is very tricky to use. But, if you like highly difficult and frustrating games (and you have a lot of patience), then this is the one for you.

Graphics graphics rating

While the graphics aren't bad, they can be a bit too intrusive with the lemmings. Sometimes the little critters will blend right in with the background.

Sound sound rating

The music is pretty catchy, but it's a bit repetitive.

Enjoyment enjoyment rating

Once you get the hang of the camera angles and the 3D element, Lemmings 3D can be pretty addictive. Unfortunately, because of difficulty, you tend to get frustrated very often and find yourself dying a lot.

Replay Value replay rating

If you go through it once, there's really not much reason to play it again.

Documentation documentation rating

The instruction book is okay. It tells you somewhat how to use the camera system and other tidbits of gameplay.
