Legend of the North: Konung

Synopsis

by Michael Tresca

Legend of the North: Konung, a role-playing game with real-time strategy and adventure elements, goes beyond action-style role-playing (e.g., Diablo) by offering dozens of non-linear quests and a strong storyline set in the complex atmosphere of 7th century Scandinavia, the mystical "Land of the North."

Eons ago when Earth was ruled by ancient gods, the most powerful mortals, the Nordic Clan, were gifted with the Bracelet of Lordship to rule. When the Age of Magic ended, they hid the bracelet deep within uncharted lands guarded by the demigod Orr. To assist him, he also had the Dragon's Amulet, which gave its wielder power over the Dragon. Millennia later, the Yellow Dogs, rivals of the Nordic Clan, fell upon Orr and his comrades. Desperate, Orr broke the amulet into three pieces and sent them far and wide. Your quest is to restore order to the world by recreating the Dragon's Amulet and finding the eternal Bracelet of Lordship.

The world of Konung is shaped by three cultures: noble traders of the powerful Byzantine Empire, tribes of wild Slavic hunters and fearless Viking warriors. The fantasy game world mixes history and classical myths with the legends, geography and storyline of the Chronicles of Time universe, both featuring magical artifacts, immortal heroes and ancient sorcery.

Real-time strategy elements include the opportunity to seize settlements, manage resources and construct various buildings. Unlike other role-playing games, you control a group of up to nine NPCs, including monsters, and command and direct individuals or the whole group. You play as one of three possible characters, each with five basic skills and seven attributes: Wolf, Eric or Konstantin.

The game, featuring more than 5000 screens and day/night lighting, authentically depicts a pseudo-historical universe. Landscape elements are taken from photographs of northern territories and all buildings, clothing and weapons were created after consultation with the National Historical Museum staff. Military professionals developed combat algorithms, using strategic and tactical planning and modeling acquired by the Soviet Army during the Cold War, making Legend of the North: Konung the first role-playing game with a mathematically verified system of strategy and tactics calculated in real time.
