SpyHunter

Review

by Jason Buchanan

Attempting a remake of a classic video game requires many of the same careful considerations as remaking a great movie or song. If the melding of elements that made the original a success don't blend in seamlessly with modern gaming sensibilities and offer a logical and exciting improvement, the failure can result in a backfire that leaves fans of the original feeling bitter and cheated. Fortunately the makers of the SpyHunter have kept the fast-paced action of the original version intact, simultaneously giving the graphics and gameplay the perfect punch to retain fans of the arcade classic and draw in a new audience.

Wisely retaining the third-person perspective of the original while moving the view in closer to accommodate for the expectations of those weaned on such racing games as Gran Turismo, the game handles as well as any of the more successful driving games to date. The controls are fluid and smooth and offer convenient trigger-finger access to a variety of familiar weaponry whether in the form of a car, a boat, or a motorcycle. The two-player options one-ups the original by giving players the option of oil-slicking their friends before jumping in the back of the weapons van for even more fun.

Missions are basic but easy to master with practice, demanding precise maneuvering and quick reaction time. Impressive graphics round out this exciting package by offering lush background whether you're cruising through the training course or down a colorful autumn road and attempting to destroy the many elusive enemies. Midway has definitely scored a success with their update of this arcade classic with a devoted following, offering an exciting ride that successfully expands on the aspects that made the original so popular.

Though the levels are a blast to work your way through, one you have mastered them there is little reason to revisit them. Opening the two-player levels after beating them in one-player mode offers the most attractive replay factor and will keep players coming back to challenge their friends.

Offering a brief background and enough information to get the player in the driver's seat, the instruction manual serves it's purpose well.
