Chrono Trigger

Review

by Julia Reges

Thirteen years after its acclaimed debut, Chrono Trigger is introduced to a new generation of gamers on DS. Square Enix has done an amazing job piecing together this version so that it appeals to those new to the series as well as veteran fans longing to do battle on the fields of time. While the story and main content remain unchanged, the handheld's distinct capabilities enhance the play mechanics. The touch screen is used to coordinate attacks, leaving the main screen uncluttered and presenting a full view of battle. For purists, the classic option features the same interface found in the Super NES game.

Chrono Trigger for DS also includes bonus dungeons, animated cut scenes, maps, a list of all the possible endings, and wireless capabilities that let you engage in monster battles. The visuals are crisp, the sound quality is great, the music is addictive, and the dialogue has been polished and reworded while still remaining true to the original game. Players will also appreciate the fast pacing and endearing, easy-to-follow storyline. If you missed this title the first time around, or if you are feeling nostalgic, Chrono Trigger is a highly recommended purchase. After all, some adventures are simply timeless.
