Sports games follow the rules and action of an athletic competition. Many allow players to assume the role of a star athlete or manage their favorite professional team. The player is often placed in the primary position of the sport, such as the quarterback in a football game or the pitcher in a baseball game. Games based on actual sporting activities of any type fit into this category. Games based on an imaginary athletic competition, such as a futuristic basketball match or a prehistoric decathlon, are also in the sports genre.
